Pilgrimage

Young Catholic Adults and the Traditional English Association of Catholic History will be organising a pilgrimage to Catholic York, including a visit to, York Oratory, the Bar Convent and St. Mary’s Bishophill – the oldest Church in York.

The weekend will include, Masses (Old Rite), adoration, the rosary visiting sites linked to St, Margaret Clitherow and socials.

Pilgrimage to Harvington Hall Sunday 29^th May 2022

Organised by the Traditional English Association of Catholic History (an all-age sister group for Young Catholic Adults).

Meet at 10.30am at the entrance to the hall and then explore the house – tour guides will be available to answer any questions you may have. Harvington Hall is one of the premier extant recusant houses left in England. It’s one time chaplain was none other than St. John Wall, one of the “Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.” It contains numerous priest holes (or "priest hides") , which were builtl for the protection of Catholic priests or laymen/laywomen, These priest holes have remained till today. Most notably, some of them were the handiwork of the master carpenter Nicholas Owen, a Jesuit lay brother.

Free parking and disable parking -  but please note there is wheelchair access to the Hall ground floor and gardens only.

Refreshments available from the Malt House Café situated in the Hall gardens, accessed via house and/or South Bridge. Please note there is uneven flooring on the upper floors. 

Mass

A Missa Cantata (Old Rite Mass) will be at 3pm in Harvington Parish Church (please note that it has been stipulated that only those that have been on the Harvington pilgrimage attend this Mass).

There will be  a talk on "Thames Valley Papists" featured on the YCA Facebook group on Sat 30th October at 2.30pm given by Dom. Christopher Greener O.S.B.  This will be proceeded by a Rosary. This is organised by YCA.

First Wednesday EF Cheltenham Mass Cancelled.

The monthly first Wednesday Low Mass (4th Aug) Cheltenham Mass at St. Gregory's Church Cheltenham, has been cancelled. 

It is not known whether permission will be given to continue this Mass in the future.

Sung Mass for the Feast of St.Gregory the Great - St. Gregory's Church, Cheltenham at 7pm on Friday 12th March

There will be an extra Missa Cantata for the patronal feast of St. Gregory the Great Church in Cheltenham. This will be the first Sung Mass, in this church, for 50 years .

There will also be Low Mass at 7pm on the first Wednesday (3rd March) at St.Gregory's.

Do Today’s Catholic Adults Know As Much About Their Faith As Catholic Children Of The Past?

When the Convent of Poor Clares* in Woodchester, Gloucestershire, was due to close in May 2011, parishioners and friends of the nuns were invited to take books and religious artefacts to save them from being destroyed. Amongst the many old books I acquired, I found a small homemade book by a nun called Sister Francis Agnes. Within the book, I discovered a rare copy of an old, 12-page Syllabus of Religious Instruction in the Schools of The Diocese of Clifton which piqued my interest: I was fascinated to find out what I could have learnt about my faith had I been born two or three generations earlier. It is not a catechism but a scheme of work.

Many Catholics I know have the desire to preserve the treasures of their Catholic heritage that have been brushed under the carpet during the last 50 years by those wanting an ‘easier’ life, suppressing the more ‘difficult’ truths of the Faith. Reading through the syllabus, I immediately realised that my knowledge of the Faith was sadly less than that of a 13 year old of the 1930s/1940s, which is when the syllabus was published under Bishop William Lee. It uses the Catechism Of Christian Doctrine For Infants And Standard I, followed by The Explanatory Catechism Of Christian Doctrine.

And so, before information such as this might be lost, it would be a good thing to promote it far and wide. Please pass it on to whomever you think might be interested so that standards of Catholic education might be helped to be raised, and the knowledge passed on to future generations.

Gloucestershire Old Rite Latin Mass News

The first Wednesday of the month Mass at 7pm at St. Gregory’s, Cheltenham is continuing! On Wednesday 6^th June it will take place in the Old Priory (adjacent to the main Church building), due to the ongoing building works. It will be celebrated by Fr. Andrew Goodman.

There will also be a Sung Requiem Mass (with Gregorian Chant) for Fr. Damian Sturdy O.S.B., and the Barker family, at Prinknash Abbey at 10:30am on Saturday 9^th June. The celebrant will be Fr. David MacDonald, who is an oblate of Prinknash.

Gloucestershire Extraordinary Form News - RIP Fr. Damian Sturdy - RIP Sr. Mary Magdalene, Mass Time Changes at Prinknash Abbey

Fr. Damian Sturdy 

Fr. Damian Sturdy passed away on the feast of St. Joseph, 19^th March. Father's funeral will take place at Nazareth House, 344 London Road, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, on Wednesday, 4^th April at 10am followed by a private burial at Prinknash.  All are welcome, but those wishing to attend, or concelebrate at, the Funeral Mass, are asked to inform:- fathermarkhargreaves@gmail.com or text 07821 754243

It is intended, at some later date, to celebrate a Requiem Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

Sr. Mary Magdalene

Sadly Sr. Mary Magdalene, a regular attended of the Old Rite Mass at Prinknash Abbey has very sadly passed away. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to find out when her funeral is.

Prinknash Abbey

Abbot Francis Baird has resigned and henceforth Prinknash Abbey are reducing their Old Rite Masses (albeit one Mass will be restored to the Sunday). The message from Prinknash states:-  

"The Abbot and his Council, having considered your various opinions, have decided that there will be

ONE SATURDAY 11am LOW MASS PER MONTH

andONE SUNDAY 3pm LOW MASS PER MONTH.

These will normally be on the FIRST and THIRD WEEKENDS RESPECTIVELY

To make that clear, for the month of APRIL 2018

SUNDAY, 1st APRIL (Easter) 3pm Mass

SATURDAY, 14th APRIL 11am Mass."

Cheltenham

Fr. McCarthy, who has been faithfully celebrating the First Wednesday of the Month Masses, at St. Gregory's in Cheltenham will retire in April. Fr. Goodman has very kindly agreed to continue celebrating this Mass. Parishioners are very grateful to Fr. McCarthy for his service over the years - and for Fr. Mills for arranging the continuation of this Mass.

Sadly, with Fr. McCarthy’s retirement and the reduction of Masses in Prinknash, this means that the number of EF Masses, per month, in Gloucestershire, will decrease from 9 to 3 per month.
